BOB AND VERA'S 25th 1988
From the Pikehands Archive (a thank you poem) --- By --- Vera
Dear Pikehands all, our thanks we send
For Silver Wedding Gift
Though to tell it very nearly
Caused a nasty rift
Bob's face lit up - "We'll toast the boys
In oodles of local brew"
"Oh no," said wife, "Some shrubs we'll buy
To make our garden new"
Negotiations then ensued
And, after some delay
A compromise was duly reached
To spend the gift this way -
A meal at the local hostelry
Will leave us change enough
To buy some plants, a bush or two
Or other garden stuff
A quarter of a century
Of mortgages and debts
Of measles, mumps and chicken pox
Of ballet shoes and pets
It's too late now to change our lives
And we wouldn't if we could
For though there've been some bad times
Most of it's been pretty good
And now we've reached our special day
You've helped to make it great
Your present got here dead on time
Not even one day late
The metre and the rhymings' poor
But the sentiment is true
For such a lovely, thoughtful deed
We send our thanks to you
