A NEWS LETTER SENT TO PIKES IN 1984
By Bob
Dear Pkd
A family party is planned for 1st December 1984. Preparations are well advanced. ie (Venue at the Cliff). An earlier date was denied by:-
- Vagaries of the licensing laws. (Poxy Magistrate)
- That quality that sets Pikehands apart from other mortals. (Apathy)
- Determined and unjustified interference with the normal smooth running of our affairs. (Holidays)
The single most important objective is the presentation of our trophy the "Hand" to the person selected by the truly democratic process endorsed by all. Not one Pikehand has failed to vote by the closing date 31st May 19** (fill in a number to suit yourself). The Pikehand of the Year must render a speech upon being revealed and presented with our Trophy and a "Scroll of Honour."
The simple matters of financing food, how much of it, transport, accommodation, entertainment, excuse for licence extension, etc., will be decided at a meeting convened for 8.00pm on thursday 25th October 1984 at the "Cliff". Bring your tankard. Nick will time proceedings.
All the usual family are invited and it is up to Pikehands to let everyone know and attend the meeting with as much information as possible. Some may not be able to attend the Booze meeting so they must ensure that their wishes are presented by a more inebriate fortunate individual. This can be done by post, busby or by pidgeon dropping.
MINUTES OF THE RESULTING MEETING 1984
Dear Pkd,
FAMILY PARTY
The meeting organised for 25th October 1984 was well attended. Pikehands came too. The following decisions were reached.
VENUE
Cliff Hotel, Hamlet Road, Westcliff-on-Sea. 8.00pm start on 1st December 1984.
LICENCE EXTENSION
Ray will make the application on the basis of Neil's 18th birthday
TRANSPORT
Nick will make arrangments for a coach to be laid on from South london. There will be a covering charge per head to be advised by Nick. Further information from Nick. It is essential that he knows how many will be using the service so you must notify him no later than 15th November 1984! Otherwise make your own way.
INVITATIONS
Each Pikehand must publicise the party to the usual family and friends making his own invitations. It is hoped there will be no absentees. We are planning in round figures for sixty men, women and children.
ACCOMMODATION
Some space is available at the venue so sleeping bags should be part of your equipment. Notify Ray if you will be staying. You are also welcome to stay with Bob but driving will be necessary.
FOOD
Graham is organising food. He will contact Pikehands for preparation of the main dishes to be brought with you on the night. He will also reimburse you for the cost of the dishes.
ENTERAINMENT
Alan should start tuning his guitar on receipt of this notice to be ready in time for his act. Music for dancing and background will be on tape. Please bring cassettes of your choice suitably identified. A further meeting has been called for 20.00 hours on 20th November at 11, Albatross Street, London, SE18 where a new song will be written. Come with lots of ideas for words and music. Time permitting, discussion of a performing custume will also take place.
FINANCE
The cost is expected to work out to £25.00 per Pikehand covering food, drink, etc. Any deviation will be made up by whip or share on the night. Should you be pressed to to accept a donation from the odd family member use your discretion but limit acceptance to £5.00 maximum. Ray is cashier and expects your prompt contribution.
TANKARDS
Essential for Pikehands
REGRETS
It is with regret that once more we will be without the company of that pillar society. Arthur Robbins is charged with rape!!
THE HAND
The prime reason for the party is The Hand. It is still not too late to nominate some unfortunate. You may avoid the Hand yourself.
